Calico dresses were initially worn by cehura, the first generation of malware on the slopes.
BTW are there any written accounts ya the appearance of these women on the scene. Did Kikuyu culture have anything close to this kama wamassai na kudunga mkuki?

The loose women were not there because polygamy took care of virtually every woman. Polygamy was one of the first institutions mzungu religions targeted as they went for the proud kikuyu culture. The lose women soon realized the crack was a meal card hence the habit of cooking and cehuraring chapos in askaris' houses. PCEA and Catholic were especially instrumental in demonizing polygamy as prostitution.

Was she allowed to entertain other men seeing as her needs were not being met? And if yes, what happens to the bastards, did they belong to the boma?

Prostitution started when beberu demanded hut tax on every home, and it had to be paid in shillings. Since kikuyu traditional societies never had money as a medium of exchange but rather used goats as "money", some women were forced to go into prostitution to get the currency to pay the hut tax coz if you didnt pay you ended up in jail.

Very interesting @Mwalimu-G.
You even answered the question I was about to ask about why they were referred to as “Chehura”.
Kudos.
