President Uhuru Kenyatta has commissioned the construction of the Sh. 4.5 billion Makupa Bridge in Mombasa County.
When complete in January 2022, the 4-lane over-sea bridge will replace the 1929 Makupa Causeway, paving the way for its demolition and restoration of the ecosystem in the area including free flow of water and marine life.

MAKUPA:
Makupa is short for "maji yamekupwa" which means the water has fallen ,it is recorded that in the old caravan days it was at Makupa where people used to cross from the island of Mombasa to the mainland ,whenever the level of water went down..
 
In October 13 2017 I posted this in MCA parliament.
MOMBASA KIBARANI/MAKUPA CAUSEWAY TO BE DEMOLISHED
Makupa causeway in Mombasa which dates back to 1920S will be demolished and a bridge built in its place, the Kenya National Highways Authority said . The bridge will be a little longer than the 120-metre structure. The tender for construction of the 10 kilometre road from Mombasa to Jomvu was awarded in June to Third China Engineering Company and work is expected to be over in 30 months. The project is the first phase of the expansion of the 41.6 kilometre Mombasa-Mariakani road.

Water was reaching to the shoulders.
So mzigo iko juu.
And they used to close over during low tide.
High tide haingewezekana.
With this bridge and the Mombasa gate at Likoni msa will change.
Lakini ile jam inakuanga pale.

So from 1929 ndio tunafikiria kujenga bridge ingine? Yaani close to 100 years ago, mzungu had already thought of what would benefit omwafrika in 2020. Nani aliroga Africans?

There are several gains associated with an island. Vile walitengeneza kibarani bridge by blocking the channel prevented Mombasa from gaining na hizi advantages.
So once the new bridge is built watafungua channel maji ipite pande zote
