BY GABS MARCH 9, 2021 1 MIN READ

An intriguing story that’s going viral on social media depicts how one Nigerian man is being ridiculed for eating a Blue Marlin Fish with the inhabitants of where he hails from oblivious of the huge value of the rare fish.
One of the reports which was sourced on social media stated;
This man reportedly caught a Blue Marlin fish days ago in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State and killed it. Little did he know that he has eaten the wealth for his generations to come.

A Blue Marlin fish is valued at about $31,000 per pound which is about N14.5 million. If the reports are correct, he would have sold the fish for 2.6 million dollars which is about N1.2 billion.

The blue marlin is one of the open ocean’s fastest, strongest predators and one of the most highly sought-after game fishes everywhere that it lives. Reaching weights of at least 1800 pounds (~820 kg) and lengths of more than 16 feet (~5 m), the blue marlin is one of the largest species of bony fishes.

Very sad story? Why? Si hata wale wangeuziwa wangeikula?

PS: This story captures the fallacy of Africans living on a dola a day very well. Unaamka kwa kijiji unakula mayai mbili kienyeji na ngwaci for breakfast (total price in NY, $15). Lunch unakula kuku na ugali with veges (another $15). Halafu unaskia WB wakisema you live below a dola a day...

Hizi story huwa very wanting; the writers try to create some hype that is unjustified. The $2.6M price is at point of sale to customers in the US/EU or wherever, and I assume that is fillet they are buying. So the fish has been bought from the fisherman, set to an airport and flown to US, sold at a wholesale market, filleted and then sold. Kwani hao wengine in the supply chain wangefanya kazi ya kanisa hawapati chochote?

It is easy to make fun of the Nigerian guy, trying to show how 'stupid and illogical' African villagers are, but in all honesty, he was never going to see anything close to that amount. And that is with a proper link to market; ikiwa ako rural sana then forget it kabisa.
