Machine cut stones will crumble if exposed to many cycles of dry-wet conditions for long periods. That is the reason they are not suitable for foundations or wet areas. Why do they crumble? The stones are made of compacted volcanic dust, which contains significant amounts of clay minerals. When exposed to water, the clay minerals expand upon absorbing the water. When the wetness drys out, the clay minerals contract. If this action of expansion and contraction is repeated over many cycles, it breaks down the stone to small particles.
