matope mingi na milima, neither of the mentioned will serve you, and in that budget range I think an escudo might be a better choice - but for matope na milima on top on the 4 wheel drive you need a some good power to go with that, also something else for consideration are the approach angles, those two cars have long noses I guess for aero dynamics, and that will work against you off road.

Escudo haitakwama?

itakwama tu, but looking at the forester and xtrail, the escudo is in the same price range and I think it will go furthest in the extreme conditions mentioned, plus I think it comes withe the biggest engine option, not sure about the power output, but combine matope and hills you need as much power as possible.
as @thesavage mentions, in such conditions one is better of in a some v8, of road customized machine, tuseme 'landcruiserish' hivi.
