I'd give this advice to my son if I had one. Walking away or even running away is the safest option even when the aggressor is on the wrong. If that girl had hit her head and died, he might have been facing murder or manslaughter charges. For what?

20 years ago no woman would confront a man andgo on to throw hands at him even when he's retreating (de-escalating, game theory) but the man's attempt to minimize the conflict emboldens the aggressor. There are boundaries and girls need to be cautioned of them.
