Over 75% of Kenyan households are now connected to electricity. This has raised the distinct possibility of electricity usage being incorporated in the matrix of considerations/factors used to determine poverty levels.
In this regard, FMCP, working with several development partners (USAID, WHO, LGBTYWZ, KaswendeAid, etc) has developed a criteria to link poverty levels and the usage of electricity for lighting purposes. The criteria is based on the NUMBER OF BULBS ON USAGE AT ANY ONE TIME IN A HOUSEHOLD AND NOT ON INSTALLED OUTLETS, MANY OF WHICH MAY NOT BE IN USE. The Bulbs Theory of Poverty by FMCP applies to those bulbs that are used inside the main house, for immediate security lighting, and the lighting of drive-way, if any, AND DO NOT APPLY TO OUTLYING BUILDINGS SUCH AS FOR SERVANTS quarters, nearby rentals, SHEDS, WORKERS' QUARTERS, ETC.
0 - 3 BULBS: Impoverished/Poor
4 - 7 BULBS: Lower Middle Class
8 - 12 BULBS: Middle Class
13 - 22 BULBS: Upper Middle Class
23 - 30 BULBS: Lower Rich Class
31 - 40 BULBS: Middle Rich Class
41 - 48 BULBS: Upper Rich Class
Above 48 BULBS: Wealthy
