Champions League: What can be decided in fourth round of group games?

Badges of the four English Champions League teams

The Champions League returns after a three-week break as we reach the business end of the group stages.
Three of the four English teams - and several other European giants - could book a place in the knockout stages with two games to spare this week.

So who needs what to qualify and who can be eliminated?
Group E
Group E - Chelsea (7), Sevilla (7), Krasnodar (1), Rennes (1)

Tuesday - Rennes v Chelsea, Krasnodar v Sevilla (both 17:55 GMT)

Chelsea could progress on Tuesday but they would need Sevilla to get at least a draw against Krasnodar.
If the Spanish side win in Russia, Chelsea will go through as long as they avoid defeat in France. If Chelsea win, they only need Sevilla to draw. If Krasnodar win, then Chelsea will have to wait.

Wins for Chelsea and Sevilla would send both through and eliminate Krasnodar and Rennes.

Group H
Man Utd (6), Leipzig (6), PSG (3), Basaksehir (3)

Tuesday - Manchester United v Istanbul Basaksehir, Paris St-Germain v RB Leipzig (both 20:00 GMT)

This is one of only two truly close groups.
Manchester United cannot clinch a place in the knockout stages this week. With placings determined by head-to-head record rather than goal difference, they could even end the day outside the top two if they lose to Basaksehir, as they did in Istanbul in the reverse fixture.

Group C
Group C - Man City (9), Porto (6), Olympiakos (3), Marseille (0)

Wednesday - Olympiakos v Manchester City (17:55 GMT), Marseille v Porto (20:00 GMT)

Manchester City will progress to the last 16 if they pick up at least one point against Olympiakos in Athens on Wednesday.
Marseille will be eliminated if they lose at home to Porto.

Group D
Liverpool (9), Ajax (4), Atalanta (4), Midtjylland (0)

Wednesday - Liverpool v Atalanta, Ajax v Midtjylland (both 20:00 GMT)

Liverpool will reach the knockout rounds if they beat Atalanta at Anfield. A draw will be enough if Ajax do not beat Midtjylland.
Danes Midtjylland will be eliminated if they lose.

Group G
Tuesday - Dynamo Kyiv v Barcelona, Juventus v Ferencvaros (both 20:00 GMT)
9 pts - Barcelona, 6 pts - Juventus, 1 pt - Dynamo Kyiv and Ferencvaros

Barcelona will progress if they win. Juventus will join them in the next round if they win, so long as Barcelona do not lose.
A draw would be enough for Barca if Juve do not lose.

Ferencvaros and Dynamo Kyiv need practically every result to go their way to qualify.

Group F
Tuesday - Borussia Dortmund v Club Bruges, Lazio v Zenit St Petersburg (both 20:00 GMT)
6 pts - Borussia Dortmund, 5 pts - Lazio, 4 pts - Club Bruges, 1 pt - Zenit St Petersburg

No teams can book a spot in the knockout stages, but Zenit St Petersburg could be out of contention if they lose and Borussia Dortmund win.

Group A
Wednesday - Atletico Madrid v Lokomotiv Moscow, Bayern Munich v Red Bull Salzburg (both 20:00 GMT)
9 pts - Bayern Munich, 4 pts - Atletico Madrid, 2 pts - Lokomotiv Moscow, 1 pt - Salzburg

Bayern Munich will be through to the knockout stages if they beat Red Bull Salzburg. They could afford to draw if Lokomotiv Moscow do not beat Atletico in the other game.

Group B
Wednesday - Borussia Monchengladbach v Shakhtar Donetsk (17:55 GMT), Inter Milan v Real Madrid (20:00 GMT)
5 pts - Borussia Monchengladbach, 4 pts - Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid, 2 pts - Inter Milan

Nobody can seal their place in the last 16 or be eliminated in Group B.

Manchester United vs Istanbul Basaksehir (11pm)

Team news
United could welcome Paul Pogba back into their squad for Tuesday's game (20:00 GMT kick-off) after the France midfielder missed Saturday's Premier League win over West Brom with a knock.

United, who are the only English club who cannot qualify for the last 16 during this round of fixtures, will be without defenders Phil Jones (knee), and Luke Shaw (hamstring), while midfielder Jesse Lingard is self-isolating after being in contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus.

Former United defender Rafael is likely to make an Old Trafford return with Istanbul Basaksehir, and ex-Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel should also line up for the visitors.

Chances of qualifying?
Data analysts Gracenote say United - who top Group H going into Tuesday's game - have a 72% chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis at Nielsen's Gracenote, said: "Manchester United were looking good prior to matchday three but then suffered a shocking defeat in Istanbul to open up the group again.

RB Leipzig are now marginal favourites to progress (75%) from the group ahead of United and Paris St-Germain (50%).

Match stats
  • Manchester United have lost three of their past four games against Turkish opponents in European competition.
  • Istanbul Basaksehir's only previous away game against an English team in European competition came in August 2018, when they lost 1-0 to Burnley in a Europa League qualifier.
  • United have won their past six home games in Europe by an aggregate score of 20-1, including their 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig this season.
  • Istanbul Basaksehir have lost their past three away games in European competition, failing to score a goal in their past two.
  • France forward Anthony Martial is looking to become the first Manchester United player to score in three consecutive Champions League games since Wayne Rooney in March 2010.
  • Istanbul Basaksehir striker Demba Ba has made four previous appearances at Old Trafford, scoring in a 1-1 draw while playing for Newcastle United in November 2011.
  • Ba and Edin Visca scored the two goals for Istanbul Basaksehir in their previous win against Manchester United. The last player to score home and away against United in the group stage of a Champions League campaign was Braga's Alan in 2012-13

PSG vs. RB Leipzig (11pm)

1606210389244.png

powerhouse clubs are set to do battle Tuesday when Paris Saint-Germain hosts RB Leipzig in a crucial Champions League match.
Both European juggernauts are chasing one of the top two spots in Group H that would get them to the knockout stage of the competition.

This is a huge match for PSG, which finds itself sitting behind Leipzig and Manchester United on the table. The Parisians are 1-2 in group play, which includes a 2-1 loss against RB Leipzig the last time these sides played back on Nov. 4 in Germany.

Suffice to say, a win would give either side a huge edge moving forward in their respective pursuits of a tournament championship.

PSG didn’t look so hot in its first match following the international break, dropping a 3-2 decision to fellow French stalwart Monaco. Kylian Mbappé finished with two goals, but it wasn’t enough in the hotly contested affair.

Looking at the statistical data, PSG has been quite average in the quartet. The Parisians currently sit on 4.6 expected goals and 4.3 expected goals against, resulting in a +0.3 xGDiff and +0.10 xGDiff/90 minutes.

RB Leipzig has been in relatively good form as of late, going unbeaten in its last three games across all competitions. Most recently, RB Leipzig picked up a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt following the hiatus.

When comparing RB Leipzig’s data against PSG, the visiting side’s advanced metrics are not as strong despite it being better in the group standings. RB Leipzig has just 3.6 expected goals and 4.1 expected goals against, yielding a -0.5 xGDiff and -0.19 xGDiff/90 minutes.

It is the clash of the heavyweights in the UEFA Champions League this Wednesday as Inter Milan play hosts to Real Madrid at San Siro.

Inter Milan have had a mixed start to the new season as they struggle to hit the heights of last season. While Antonio Conte’s men are fifth in Serie A, they have fared much worse in Europe, as they are rooted to the bottom of Group B, with just two points from their three games so far.

However, having snapped their four-game winless streak in all competitions this past weekend against Torino with a 4-2 win, the Nerazzurri will be aiming to carry forward that momentum and revive their Champions League campaign.

Real Madrid, too, have been well below their best both in domestic and continental competitions. Zinedine Zidane’s side are currently third in the group, level on four points with second-placed Shakhtar Donetsk and one below leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Merengues head into the game on the back of two disappointing results – a 4-1 defeat to Valencia, which was followed by a 1-1 draw against Villarreal this past weekend. And they will be hoping to quickly bring an end to that run and move upwards in the Champions League standings.

The reverse fixture played earlier this month saw Real Madrid beat Inter Milan 3-2 courtesy a late Rodrygo winner after Lautaro Martinez and Ivan Perisic had cancelled out early strikes from Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos. And ahead of this blockbuster clash at San Siro, The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at both the teams.

Team News & Tactics

There are no fresh injury concerns for Antonio Conte to contend with heading into Wednesday’s game. However, the Inter Milan manager will continue to be without Marcelo Brozovic and Aleksandar Kolarov, both of whom tested positive for coronavirus recently. Matias Vecino, Stefano Sensi and Andrea Pinamonti are out with injuries.

Alexis Sanchez played a key role in the comeback win against Torino at the weekend. However, the Chilean is set to drop to the bench on Wednesday, with Lautaro Martinez replacing him in the lineup. Partnering the Argentine should be in-form superstar Romelu Lukaku.

Probable Lineup (3-5-2): Handanovic; Skriniar, de Vrij, Bastoni; Hakimi, Barella, Gagliardini, Vidal, Perisic; Lukaku, Martinez

Real Madrid
Real Madrid are in a very bad shape with respect to their roster issues, as captain Sergio Ramos and key striker Karim Benzema are both ruled out for the clash. Apart from the duo, Luka Jovic and Eder Militao also miss out after having tested positive for coronavirus recently, while Federico Valverde and Alvaro Odriozola are out injured as well.

There is some positive news for Zidane, though, as Brazilian enforcer Casemiro is back in contention after serving his isolation period and has been included in the 21-man travelling squad. There is also a place for Castilla players Victor Chust and Hugo Duro in the roster for the Inter Milan clash.

Considering the number of absentees, changes to the lineup that featured against Villarreal at the weekend are likely to be minimal. No alterations are expected in the backline, with Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Nacho and Ferland Mendy all starting in front of first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Casemiro’s return will serve as a timely boost for the Madrid side that has lacked a solid presence in the centre of late. The Brazilian should start at the base of the three-man midfield, with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos occupying the remaining two slots. This would mean Martin Odegaard will have to drop to the bench.

Eden Hazard struggled at the weekend against Villarreal but is likely to be given a go at San Siro on Wednesday. The Belgian ought to occupy the left flank, while Lucas Vazquez could make way for Rodrygo on the right. With no Benzema and Jovic, Mariano Diaz, who scored in the previous game, should once again start as the centre-forward.

Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Nacho, Mendy; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Rodrygo, Mariano, Hazard

Key Stats
  • This will be Real Madrid’s first away game against Inter Milan since November 1998, when they lost 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League under Guus Hiddink.
  • Inter Milan have lost three of their last four meetings with Real Madrid in European competitions (D1), including their latest encounter earlier this month.
  • Real Madrid have won seven of their eight Champions League fixtures against Italian opposition under Zinedine Zidane (L1). The lone defeat in this run came against Juventus in 2017/18.
  • Inter Milan have never lost at home to Real Madrid in any European competition (W5 D2). The Nerazzurri have won each of their previous three such fixtures.
  • Real Madrid have conceded at least two goals in each of their last five matches in the Champions League.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is back in training and could face Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Liverpool have a 100% record in this season's Champions League and will reach the last 16 if they beat the Serie A side at Anfield (20:00 GMT).

Liverpool's list of injuries remains long, with centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term absentees, and captain Jordan Henderson, fellow midfielder Thiago Alcantara and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold all still unavailable. Midfielder Naby Keita went off with an apparent muscular injury against Leicester on Sunday.

Having barely even broken a sweat when the sides met three weeks ago in Italy, it is no shock to see the Reds as 3/5 (1.60) favourites with bet365.

Atalanta have won just one of their last six games in all competitions and are 4/1 (5.0) to boost their hopes of reaching the next stage of the tournament by taking the points at Anfield.

The visitors have drawn their last two fixtures in Serie A and another stalemate is available at 10/3 (4.33).
Atalanta, have only taken the points in one of their last six games and conceded 13 times.

Mattia Caldara is out for Atalanta alongside Ruslan Malinovskyi and Fabio Depaoli, but there was good news for the Italians as Robin Gosens, Marten de Roon, Jose Luis Palomino and Pierluigi Gollini all returned at the weekend.

The best of the stats
  • Liverpool won 5-0 in the reverse fixture against Atalanta, but they last won multiple games against an Italian side in a European campaign in 2007-08 - two victories over Inter Milan in the last-16 of the Champions League.
  • Two of Atalanta's three heaviest losses in European competition have been at the hands of English opponents - 5-1 to Manchester City last season and 5-0 to Liverpool this month.
  • Liverpool are looking to record four consecutive victories in the Champions League for the first time since March 2009.
  • Atalanta have won their past three away games in the competition, scoring at least three goals in each.
  • Their blank against Liverpool at home ended a run of 10 games in which they scored, at an average of 2.3 per match. They have never previously failed to score in back-to-back games in the Champions League.
  • Diogo Jota has scored four goals in three Champions League games for Liverpool, and would be the fastest player to five goals in the competition for the Reds if he finds the net on Wednesday.
  • Salah has netted in his past two Champions League appearances, and doing so again on Wednesday would equal his longest scoring streak in the competition.
  • Duvan Zapata has been directly involved in five goals in five group games for Atalanta in the Champions League (four goals and one assist), with three of those goals coming in three appearances this season.
  • Josip Ilicic has scored a third of Atalanta's away Champions League goals - four out of 12 - and he is the only player to have scored more than once away from home for the club in the competition.
