The Mangbetu are a people of Central Africa present in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a Nilo-Sudanese tribe, originally from ancient Nubia (Egypt-Sudan). Mangbetu are a tribe that are known for the practice of skull deformation.
In fact, they wrap their baby’s head in cords, before bone consolidation, for a year, giving them a very elongated skull, a sign of beauty and intelligence. The origin of this practice dates back to ancient Egypt. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Mangbetu kingdom was built. Its founder was Nabiembali.
They are known as excellent blacksmiths and sculptors, they also practice pottery and basketry. Mangbetu art is very developed, in particular wooden figures, with many scarifications. Their African Magbetu masks are rarer.
