Someone asked about long term ownership of the FA20DIT subarus namely Forester, Legacy, Outback.

Now here is an account of how it happens step by step after buying the car;

1. Brand new import, you are very happy, the power it has is very addictive, those DITs for a fact are pretty quick.
- However even when just a few weeks old in kenya, you feel a rattling sound on steering wheel when driving in rough roads, you visit your favourite subbie mech and they immediately tell you that’s the rack and its a common issue, they advise you wait until it gets louder then have 120k in hand to replace it.

- 6 months down the line you hand your 120k to the mech for a brand new subaru OEM rack, needless to say, this rack will start issues again in a year.

2. Your mech has advised you to ONLY use premium fuel because the engine is very sensitive so you stick to V-Power alone but a year later, when you accerelate you hear a ‘Ta Ta Ta’ sound coming from the engine.
- Your favourite mech says thats a slow knock and you should prepare 500k in hand because you’ll need a new engine soon.

- But you wonder why because you have been using high quality fuel only, the mech says, ‘zinakuwanga hivyo’ while pointing to more DITs zimelala kwa workshop because owners can’t afford a new engine- he says he can rebuild the block but ni 50-50.

- Less than 6 months later, you have 500k in hand for a new engine, you hand it to shamas after bargaining tooth & nail and finally buying it at 410k, the mech installs the engine but the new engine also has a knock 🧐, you take it back to shamas who give you a replacement while the mhindi is lamenting how the DIT is giving them losses.

3. With a new engine & very silent rack, you are happy, the car is okay but wait 🥵, the car starts to lose power when accerelating on hills and jerks a bit when changing gears, your favourite mech points to the CVT gearbox and gives you a quote for CVT service- he insists only Subaru CVT fluid should be used. 35k handed out and the gearbox is serviced, the shifts improve but the jerking never truly goes away. What your mech hasn’t told you is soon you will be coming for another gearbox.

4. By this time the car is approaching 3 years old locally, the rattling from the steering is coming back again 😞, by this time you already know 120k is needed again. The CVT gets worse the car can’t drive properly, your fav mech hands you a 250k quote for CVT replacement while at the same time you can start to hear a ‘Ta Ta Ta’ sound from the engine 😭😭

- By this time, you stop judging owners who’ve abandoned their units at the workshop.
- In a period of 3 years, you’ve spent half the car’s value in maintainance.
- No single car out here is giving people PROPER character development like the DIT Subarus, I repeat No single car.
- If you have to buy a Subaru, avoid the DIT line completely, that was a lemon straight from factory.
