Somalia lowers age of majority, defying U.N. convention on rights of child
31.03.2024, 14:59

Somalia’s parliament made several amendments to its interim constitution on Saturday, including lowering the age of majority from 18 to 15.
Until now, the law in Somalia considered a person under the age of 18 to be a child. The amended constitution states that the term child “refers to a person under the age of 15.”

By adopting the amendments, Somalia violated its obligations to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which defines a child as a person under the age of 18. A day before the vote, Human Rights Watch’s deputy Africa director Laetitia Bader warned that the amendments seek to weaken constitutional protections for children, especially girls, putting them at greater risk of marriage and depriving them of protection from various forms of abuse.

Bader called on Somalia’s donors to dissuade lawmakers from passing the amendments by all means. Since 2014. The European Union and its member states have donated more than EUR 3.5 billion to Somalia.

They know how to manipulate corrupt kenyan leaders for their benefit. Corrupt leaders voted by corrupt voters

That's actually their plan, taking over Kenya.

Our citizenship and ownership system is very relaxed, thats the reason they opt for kenya instead of Uganda or say Rwanda

Soon we will be the minority in all sectors and i fear because this sets the ground for discrimination as they choose not to integrate with us.

Muslims in Kiambu allege bias in ID
issuance

Members of the Muslim community in Kiambu have expressed concern over alleged discrimination by the government during the issuance of identification cards.
They decried that Immigration officers subject them to discriminating and unfair vetting processes to ascertain their nationality before they are issued with the crucial cards.

As a result of not having the requisite identification documentation, the Muslims, led by Juma Hemedi, chairperson in charge of Muslim community in Kiambu, regretted that their youths have remained jobless over the years. While some of them are also said to have failed to register for marriages, others have failed to access key Ggovernment services and treatment at some hospitals because of lack of ID. Speaking during Iftar Dinner in Thika Town which was also attended by EALA MP Maina Karobia, Hemedi, while pleading with the government to make it easier for them to obtain ID cards, further lamented low appointment of Muslim community members to government positions.
Echoing his sentiments, Hassan Olenado, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims chairman called on the government to establish clear policies governing the issuance of the crucial documents to avert push and pull during the identification processes.

But truth be told, obtaining a mere ID for some marginalized communities in this country is a huge headache. Wait, even those from non-marginalized communities have to part with something. I do not think denial of IDs prevents crime and such. After all, real criminals and aliens easily get the document if they really need it. The so-called vetting has only served to deny IDs to deserving cases while enriching corrupt government workers. Actually it has been the cause of deep resentment among some communities. I would rather have 100 illegals get IDs than 1 genuine case missing out due to irrational or discriminatory red tape.

Imagine a situation where you cannot get some government and other services due to lack of an ID, yet the same government is unable to issue you with an ID, or even declare you an alien. In other words, the vetting thing has been mostly abused to victimize deserving cases while non-citizens with the means easily obtain the document. It's not as if an ID gives you some superpowers to break the law and such.

But shouldn't the process be streamlined rather than doing away with it, it was there for a reason. I don't claim to have a solution, but I know this ain't it.

There is consequences when governments become careless with their official documents. Unajua one reason Nigerians have such a hard time travelling, with finance institutions, with international education / qualification accreditation. Its coz the international community doesn't seem to believe any document coming out of Nigeria is legit

It's one of those government functions that are too messed up to repaired, much like traffic police in most traffic checkpoints. Both were constituted to prevent illegalities, but with time they became enablers of the same illegalities.
