Safaricom and all their might

I am sitted here wondering, how come the mighty safaricom, the mighty company which controls more than 60% of kenyas equity market capitalisation....how come this giant has never expanded beyond Kenya's borders? Like kcb and akina equity.

Right now the plans to expand into Ethiopia might stall....or drag on for too long.

Did the leadership has become comfortable? Or do they think they are too big to fail? Or do they lack new ideas and innovations.? Apart from mpesa there is no other innovation they have brought to market.

The government should push hard and split that company into several pieces, a bank, a phone company and a phone seller.

Am looking at the offering by the world's largest telephone company, and safaricom has more innovation than them. And AT&T is far much older than our safaricom.

Why haven't they expanded to.other countries?
The licence costs are damn high. Even before you think of the infrastructure.

read more about mtn ,Vodafone etc, they're way bigger than safaricom and they already captured those markets, very hard for safaricom to get a sizeable market share, that's why Ethiopia was their best chance.
the only edge safaricom has is mpesa but it was rejected or fail to pick in south Africa.

There is a lot more trade between kenya and uganda than between kenya and Ethiopia. I would have thought they do not fear competition and go for it in Uganda as compared to Ethiopia. The EAC trading block would have been beneficial

Rolling out communication infrastructure is a huge undertaking that requires financing from third parties..It is also almost impossible to steal market share from incumbents. It is for the same reasons you won't see bigger firms entering the Kenyan market to take on safaricom.

What do they use? How can anyone live without mobile money?
it was launched in SA in 2010 But by 2016, only 76k active users

but i think major reason is regulations, in SA it's much rigid, from privacy issues to anti money laundering.

"banking rules and regulations in South Africa are stricter than in Kenya. Remember the debate on regulating M-Pesa through Central Bank of Kenya (CBK)? If CBK had decided to lump M-Pesa with banks, it could probably have gone the South African way. Fifth, clouded judgement at a higher level. While in Kenya, Michael Joseph understood the peculiarity of the Kenyan market, the key leaders of telcos in SA might not. Did they pay a visit Kenya’s rural areas?"

The table below illustrates the market share of each of the major mobile network operators in the country, as of March 2021.[18]

3Africell Uganda1.24.2

current situation in Uganda, very hard to get new subscribers to a new teleco provider. It is the same reason MTN has not yet ventured into Kenya, despite covering a big chunk of Africa.
The only serious way Safaricom can venture into Uganda is by buying one of the top two, otherwise it wont make sense.

Safcom can not technically venture into TZ because basically it will be competing against itself...the Vodacom shareholding.

Haiyai! Hata saa hii nimelipa 120 ya milk na mpesa.
Budaa, hata boda tunalipa na mpesa. Juzi in Nanyuki I saw a mayai boilo 'hawker' with a till number. And with the introduction of Pochi La Biashara,it makes more sense for small traders to receive payment thru mpesa.
I think all this points to innovativeness(SP) of safaricom CT other telecoms around the world..

And then this.
