Mnyambuo looked at the numbers and figured he could compete with the likes of Reddit and Twitter. So he decided to gentrify what was essentially a keg joint. As a result he drove away many longtime patrons and has the difficult task of wooing new ones from other spaces that are more established, more lively, and better moderated. Maybe it was worth the gamble. Maybe not. It will take a while to see the full effects of the changes. At the end of the day site ni yao and they can run it as they see fit.
