When Raila Odinga was detained in 1982, Ida his wife was a teacher at Kenya high school and she continued to be a teacher there for the rest of the time Raila was in his first detention stint. Raila was released from detention around 1986/87 and then detained again in 1988. The second detention destabilized Ida and she became openly anti government. The Moi government on its part decided to sack Ida and sent armed policemen to evict her from her residential house at Kenya high school. The eviction was done in broad daylight and the students saw their teacher being evicted from her house as though she was a criminal. She was forced to pack her belongings in a private truck the police had come along with.
Ida gave this story to Maisha magic tv station sometimes in 2017. Once her belongings were packed in the truck, she, her children and the truck driver moved along Ngong road and Kilimani area looking for a house. They got a house before dusk and they were happy they were not going to spend the night in the cold. They paid the deposit and all that is required for a new house but 2 days later, the landlord learnt who she actually was and demanded that she leave the house. The landlord was however sympathetic and he refunded the money she had paid and added a bonus for the inconvenience. The hunt for a house thus continued but this time she got references and got a one tenant house in a middle class Nairobi estate.
This where the story gets interesting. In her first day in this house, a man came to the premises in the evening. He sat at the place reserved for the watchman and didn’t talk to no one, he was dressed like a watchman though he looked like a trained soldier. Ida approached the man and asked him who he was and what he was doing there. The man replied that he was Peter and had been sent there by the boss to protect Raila’s family. Ida let him be and she went back to the house to prepare dinner for the family. The next morning while she looked outside, the man was gone, but he came back at exactly 6pm and stayed the whole night. The routine was repeated the next night and the next and whenever Ida asked the man who the boss was, his reply was always ‘he is the big boss, a friend of your family. I am here to protect you and the kids’. Ida got used to the man and started giving him food and tea at dinner time as though he was a member of the family, but the man could not still reveal who the boss was. This went on for 2 or so years until Raila was released from detention in 1989, and a few days after Raila’s release, the mysterious man vanished.
Ida in the interview did not seem keen to know who this mysterious watchman was, but she was happy he provided her and the children with protection. Who do you think this mysterious man was, was he a state agent or an employee of one of Odinga’s family friends? Ida Odinga needs to write a book about her tribulations as a wife of a government critic.
