Fake Shiny Eyed Muslim Friday Beggars

Today I witnessed a strange sight.

A pack of buibui clad women with small children in tow were begging for Friday alms at the Jamia mosque business complex. They'd stand and stare forlornly at the Somali stall owners, all the while conversing among themselves in undiluted Greek, mumbling about how stingy the business folk were today. If a kid broke away to wander from the group, you'd here 'Mohammed, ũka haha!'

Islam as a religion demands that it's believers give zakat to the needy. This has created a 'business' around this pillar of Islam and dependence on the Muslim's obligation to give alms to the less endowed. This is where your 'fake' Muslims come although there are Kikuyus who are Muslim faithfuls.

I heard their conversations and they were far from brotherly. No wonder most of the stall-holders either ignored them or reciprocated the rudeness by conversing in ki-Somali among themselves.

This is an old age business in nyairofi, at one time was dealing with motor vehicle spare parts along kirinyaga road and Friday was their day before converging at jamia mosque !
