Ex-Zimbabwe Farmers in .ke

Ramiran

Elder Lister
Some years back zimbabwe's Mugabe initiated land reforms that saw numerous white farmers leave Zimbabwe.

Several groups relocated to .ke and bought land in various parts of the country.

One group bought close to 100 acres in a place called Tuala (south west most end of Nairobi nationa park fence - Kajiado north Const) past Nazarene university on Masai lodge Road.

This group gawanad the 100 acre land among themselves (5) and put up greenhouses and set up the insides vizuuuuri useing the contractor's people.

Then they started looking for local nyeuthi to work in the greenhouses project:

1. During the greenhouse construction stage, three of the younger male ex-zim farmers had befriended watu wa mjego and would even go drinking together.

2. During those drinking sessions in local cheap bars, all nyeuthis present would ask them about jobs in the project once building was complete. The muzungu farmers would ask a few questions and take contacts of the nyeuthiz.
3. During greenhouse construction many people had come to the site to enquire on jobs and had left their papers. Among them there were many from good local agri/technical college's.

So, when the ex-zim farmers decided to start operations, they contacted 14 nyeuthz from the 2 above sources

Work started: it involved kazi ya mkono creating nurseries for 7 different types of plants then transfering them to bigger trays 3 times in 4 months and related tasks.

After 2,3 years around year 2001, 4 of the original 7 types of plants had been discarded and the remaining three were doing well and exports for the 3 had already begun and 2002 was going to be the first year all greenhouse's plant the 3 types in the largest possible scale.

In 2008 the wazungu built a school classroom size factory and brought in machines. Now 2 of the 3 types of plants, were being prepared by the nyeutiz and fed into machies and a substance extructed and exported.

In 2015 the wazungu brought in more machines in the factory and started processing and exporting 2 diffrent types of plants that were coming in refrigerated canter truck from another group of ex-zim farmers in RV.

By 2019 those 3 young ex-zim farmers who had gone out drinking with greenhouse construction watu wa mjengo and who were known area area, and had all along over the years been seen around using public transport, tuk tuk and bodas at masai lodge stage, started turning up in fancy latest reg supedup 4x4 SUV.

This is when serious usororaji begun.

Like hawa watu wanaunda mapeni serious with whatever that is that they produce and export.

Brife Usororaji was conduted and the following was found.

1. The workers were well paid (level ya fundi wa mjengo) and they got tea and proper lunch daily.
3. All the nyeuthi workers are not only illiterate but also stupid.
4. The test and questions asked during recruitment were designed to confirm this..e.g after confirming that a guy was totally illetrate, they would be shown pictures of common, scientific items like a beaker, thermometer, etc and all those who were illiterate but able to identify any of the items did NOT get the jobs.
5. So, it was noted that they wanted illiterate fools
6. Info from the nyeuthi workers is that the whole operation is structured in such a way that the Nyeuthi can never know the exactly processes involved in what is being done.
7. Movment is restricted within the compound and the nyeuthi sit around the dining hall area and are called into the greenhouses for specific tasks.
8. Non of the nyeuthi have been into the small factory where the plants are processed, most they can say is...kuna machin za kukamua hizo plants huko ndani. After harvesting and preparing the plants the nyeuthi didn't have the slightest idea what happens after that. Even the loading area is such that non of the nyeuthi could see how many boxes/bottles were being loaded for export.
9. The nyeuthi workers are very happy there 2 or 3 have left and been replaced with other illiterate fools.

So it was decided there was need to find out exactly what the ex-zim farmers were producing, the related processes, production costs, sale price, profits etc.

After it became obvious that the required info was not obtainable...the question arose:

1. Even if the ex-zim farmers were to willingly provide all the info needed to run such an operation, which type or group of nyeuthiz can organize themselves and work together the way those ex-zim farmers have done. i.e 17 different families, 5 in Tuala and 12 in RV all working togerther successfuly and making good money ?

After this questions, the subject was changed and that whole ex-zim farmer thing was forgoten in like 2.5 seconds

There you have it.

I know Tuala very well including the interiors. The biggest project there ni Ile ya muhindi ya kuuza maziwa ( forgotten his name). This one of Mzungu and greenhouse is a lie.

Ole Ngishu farm...am just after the sgr bridge after Tuala shopping centre..

Solid strategy from them, the goal is to keep everyone in the dark untill they cement first mover advantage. By the time people learn exactly amout the operation and the market they have already established a solid un official monopoly such that competing with them would require huge resources. Am talking about having greased everyone in the operation line from local governments hadi the foreign export companies. You try getting in and you're frustrated at every stage.

The export market even for speciality crops is so huge.
And if frozen mostly is a fresh vegetable.

I do not see much wrong assuming the story is true.
It’s nothing different to having a copyrights or patent to an invention .
One has to do this in Kenya if you ask me otherwise it’s gonna be a case like simu ya jamii,M-PESA,sale clothes shop, mobile phone shop.. the list goes on and on … copycat business.

Same thing happens to some of the Junguu-owned ranches in Taita Taveta - except here there are well-educated veterinary graduates (one is a friend). Even there knowledge, and movement are very compartmentalized.
