Everyone is in panic mode regarding COVID19 and as western scientists are up busy trying out all cocktails of tests, Africa's hope relies only on God. Am not saying it's wrong to ask for spiritual intervention, this is not about that.

We have seen some countries approve use of chloroquine drugs as one of the treatment. From ages, and we all know that even before invasion by missionaries, Africans usually relied on traditional medicine. Malaria lived with us even before the white man's invasion, but when he encountered deaths from unknown sickness, he termed it dangerous to our existence, took our own herbs and mass produced the medicine. We clapped for this magic trick, but before we went back to rethink about mwarobaini and all, he had managed to educate the mass against the old medical ways.

Humanity has passed through different stages, but the more things change the more they remain the same.
The modern virus isn't something new, but since it's spread is affecting different ethnic groups at a high rate, now we have to panic. But let's ask to what extent?

We can spend the whole day panicking, or even create time to panic. Like morning and at 4 in the evening, you know, to conserve energy. But something at the end of all drama will have to be done. Our kenyan government knowing well it's poor managerial experience it has, cannot operate leave alone fund a research centre like more developed countries. The actual copy paste button now at play.

It's high time the Kenyan and other African governments went back to create simple research institutions on african medicine and science behind traditional bush herbs. We might have the cure to many ailments but we are too lazy to act, or to put it better, we are praying to the westerners to find cure so they can sell it to us. How unfortunate!

There has been several attempts to mass produce and market African traditional herbs for various ailments
Murugu/Makini herbal clinics etc, But they all fail because the vast majority of Africans have no faith in African traditional herbs
because they are....African. "Vitu kama dawa hutengenezwa na wazungu" period.

The problem with traditional medicine is that it is closely tied with spiritual and supernatural practices, these are not scientific and cannot go hand in hand with science, you will see someone prescribing a concoction made from a certain tree bark but for it to work you have to make a certain chant, or take it facing mt.kenya, or after having sex with your wife. If we can take a scientific approach then i think there is potential, but it's difficult, even chinese medicine has spiritual/supernatural elements.

Then the quacks got into the game and all faith went out the window....

I will rephrase the article...but regarding kemri too, alot of research and contribution is done, but how many of their medical findings can you highlight as having been implemented not just to society but to the world?.

Mti mwarubaini. Herbal medicine is like any other medicine BTW, just that its administration is a bit crude. Pharmacognosy is the study of herbs and is a unit in the university when taking bachelor's and master's degrees in Pharmacy
