In the past the demand for education was low, and at that time it was just about the kids getting an education, as long as one went to school the future was bright, not the case nowadays, and the rich or the haves have shifted attention from just getting an education to getting some 'quality' education.
Kids from rich families have a totally different challenge, one that is to master management s opposed to kids from poor families whose challenge is more of acquisition, the exposure and skills needed are very different.
Public schools have not changed, especially when it comes to the content and skills taught, its just that the world has changed, information is more readily available and cheap, and everyone has discovered that education is the key to success, and thus that key is becoming more and more irrelevant and a different key has to be sought.

You cannot manage what you can't understand....management is a skill you acquire through experience not sitting in a class...this was the reason why the post independence African ministers failed to steer the country properly...they had the papers from fancy colleges abroad but 0 experience...ni kizungu Tu and a taste for finer things....
I don't know what public schools you attended and when but when I was in school there was something called debates...they instilled confidence for public speaking, we had a pronounciation class that helped us learn how to enunciate words...we had a soft skills lesson as part of our English lesson that helped learn manners.....
Going to an expensive school guarantees you nothing...like I said these kids still go back to mummy and daddy for assistance and upkeep....see Kenyatta and family....Koinange and family...the list is long

, we literary had no text books, even the teachers at times did not have text books, it was a sorry state of affairs, wacha tu.That said, I know management needs experience, but kids can be prepared for management, by teaching them arts, history, philosophy, classical music and the likes, areas that expose an individual to a different kind of reasoning, and as you have mentioned you were lucky in that you were exposed to such.
