Beware of the dangers of feeding highly processed foods to your kids

Inflammatory bowel disease is an umbrella term that encompasses Irritable bowel disease, Crohns and Ulcerative colitis

It looks like these conditions are quite common amongst the 16 to 25 age bracket huko majuu; and are associated with consumption of highly refined foods and sugars. With many middle class families in Kenya turning to highly processed foods, we should be wary of the dangers of food items such as candy, cookies, Chips (french fries), highly refined flour etc. juices and the preservatives in canned foods.

That maziwa lala, fermented veggies, muhogo and sweet potato that some some families abandon could actually be very beneficial in keeping our gut healthy

I know of three cases involving summer bunnies who presented with nondescript signs of abdominal pain. These rapidly progressed to bloody diarrhoea characterized by as many as ten visits to the bathroom. All cases were negative for microbial infection and blood loss poisoning. Examination of the colon revealed severely inflamed and eroded linings

Folks, we should not entirely abandon our native foods for foods jungu. There is a reason banianis stick to their curries and spices. Faster and tastier is not always healthy

I agree. Problem is, majuu it's cheaper to eat junk food than fresh produce, because it costs more to farm organic crops than those that will be processed. In Kenya you can buy a big, creamy avocado for 50 bob. Even as little as 20 bob in the slums. In the US the same thing costs about 300-400 bob at a grocery store, it could cost even more at a farmers market depending on your area. So the average 16-25 year old summer bunny would rather buy a cheeseburger and fries with that money.

Glad you are looking at it from the cost point of view. Generally, what we take for granted like wimbi or mangoes, avocado and even plain cassava cost an arm and a leg majuu. Omena is easily shs 1600 per kilo for the chinese variety and 3000 shs a kilo for the "organic" Lake Victoria variety. Ground omena costs a cool 4000 shs a kilo

But there is also a problem with attitudes. Middle class kids in Kenya consider it uncool to feast on a chicken bone or cow intestine (and mutura). These foods have serious nutritional and GIT health benefits
