I just saw some traumatizing video of children involved in a bad road accident. No one was. attending to them. People were just staring, transfixed like confused sheep. They didn't know what to do.

Do you know what to do if you just arrived at a scene with a large number of casualties?

If you cannot manage such a scene, would you be capable of offering first aid?

If you wouldn't offer first aid, do you have a first aid kit in your car? Your house?

Have you taken any first aid training with the past 5 years?

Very valuable skills that everyone needs to have.

If one doesn't have basic First Aid skills, then you have only yourself to blame as a lot of materials are now available on online forums such as YouTube.

Also, if you contact St.John's Ambulance or the Kenya Red Cross, they are very willing to come and teach you (as a group) for a few hours on the basics free of charge...and you get certification to boot! We always have it annually pale kwa mjengo.

How can we reach a critical mass of people who can administer first aid? People who know what to do when they suspect there could be a spinal injury.

You cannot administer first aid to yourself when you are a casualty. You need others to help you. This is a common good skill.

How do you approach it from your own household?

I just noticed that my car doesn't have a first aid kit(stolen). My house doesn't have one, and my office too.

The only way to reach the masses is to make it part of CBC, those are very essential skills which are overlooked either by design or ignorance. Tukiambiwa cbc curriculum needs revision we brand others as anti change.
I personally need recertification

I'm from the 8-4-4 system and the only time I was taught any safety-related material was in class 5. I don't remember learning anything about first aid in secondary school and in college.

Its called the bystander effect. Many people would stare and not help a victim when in a crowd because they're waiting on someone else to step in. It only takes 1 person to assist the victim to break the bystander effect and most people will soon join in on the rescue. If you witness such a scenario please break the bystander effect, if you God forbid ever become a victim it helps to call out bystanders in specific terms, for instance you are more likely to get assistance when you say a phrase like "You in the blue shirt do such and such" than speaking in general phrases like "Please help me".

True man. In life always aspire to be well of. My mentor usually tells me " Nin anan lacag haysanin nasab maahan" which translates to a man with no money is lower caste/dishonourable. It a very cold insensitive thing to say but everyday i see why he is right.
