There is a common misconception that electrons revolve around the nucleus in elliptical paths similar to a solar system. The fact is that they don't. The diagram is drawn that way but its just to make people understand the relation of electrons to the nucleus.
The speed and position of a planet or any body in a solar system can be determined.
You cannot determine both at the same time for an electron with any precision because observing one of those those qualities affects the other.

are you talking about schrodinger's cat? because if you are that diagram would be a bit different. Electrons gain and loose energy, and every time that happens, it affects the its location relative to the nucleus which is slightly different from schrodinger's cat

Distilled and very simplisticly, it comes down to this, you can measure the velocity/speed or the position of a particle with some accuracy but you cant get both because the very act of measuring alters one of those qualities. E.g suppose you have a microscope that can observe an actual electron.
the light/photons from the microscope that would hit the electron to let you "see" it would only allow you to measure one thing. because "seeing it"would then add energy to it therefore changing its position...or would perhaps increase/decrease its speed.

Ahh, the same way that light is both a particle and a wave, depending on how you measure it? but it cannot be both?.... it is either one or the other?

No. That one now would be equal Schrodingers Cat since its both states until you choose a method of the observation, the same way the cat is both alive and dead until you actually open the box to make the observation.

Heisenberg's principle shows that the very action of doing the observation fundamentally makes it impossible to know both position and speed with precision. The action itself alters one of the qualities you would want to measure.

Here's an example. You know in star trek they have machines called teleporters that somehow take all your atoms from one place and rearrange them in another place exactly? In the show (The Next Generation) they had to create something called Heisenberg Compensators because geeks would point out what they were proposing was impossible. The machine might be able to know where a particular electron is but not is speed or vice versa. So if they tried to beam you from spot A to spot B. The machine would miss subatomic particles and of course the end result would not be a human being reassembled on the other side. So they "invented" the compensators that would get around this problem via tv-magic.
