A Few Things You Might Find Unusual in Tanzania

Most Nissan Matatus in Tanzania are high-roof, not because the law requires such, but because passengers (market) have a preference for such vehicles. High-roof Matatus are seen as more decent since passengers do not have to squeeze in and out, plus they are more airy. Lesson; given a chance, the market can rightly dictate the direction public transport takes.

In Tanzania, rents for normal, low-end and middle houses are paid yearly in lump sum. The high-end ones will sometimes accept a 6 months' lump sum. This format means less headache for property owners and more pressure for tenants. Lesson; what you are accustomed to is not always the norm. People operate on formats that would be considered crazy elsewhere. Why? Because all systems are man-made.

In Tanzania, it is normal for investors in boda bodas and Tuk Tuks to engage drivers in an arrangement where the driver agrees to remit a given amount of money everyday for a given number of years, after which they get to own the motorbike or TukTuk. This ensures that drivers don't steal, take good care of their machines, and remain with the employer for years. In other words, the drivers have more stake in the investment than the owner, which ensures that the investor remains stress free. Lesson; societies have the power to decide how they organize economic activities. It is not a must to copy-paste everything.
