I'm not Catholic but feel like it needs pointing out that the Pope didn't legitimise the sin of homosexuality. He said such couples can be blessed, not the union. Small difference but at the end of the day, it's a move that should be condemned.

The catholics, and other high-church denominations believe that the church has more authority than the scriptures. In their view, they are greater than the scriptures because they determine what is considered the canonical Bible.
This led to the breakaway from Catholicism of other denominations that favoured a low-church approach, and authority of the Bible above all else. They also stripped down the Bible to the essential books of the Hebrew Bible: the Law (torah), the prophets, the books of wisdom, the psalms and added the letters of the early apostles as the new testament.
The high-church approach has been misused in the past in acquiring political power, waging wars and ruling people, all in the name of maintaining authority of the church. This suspiciously sounds like what the Jewish religion before the temple was destroyed. The one that Jesus criticized and paid a heavy price for doing so.

Yep, there is a lot of contradiction as well as the use of additional books. Do I believe Catholics will go to Heaven? Yes. However, what we should all agree is that no organisation in modern times has done as much charity work as the Catholic church, shady and bloody past not withstanding.
