African Musical Greats of Yesterday

The current crop of popular Tanzanian musicians did not just happen. They grew up listening to even greater stars who came before them. The current stars owe their success to musicians of past years. This was exemplified several years ago by Diamond when he donated a car to a retired and ailing musician as a way of acknowledging his positive influence. One unparalleled giant of the past happens to be Marijani Rajabu, a prolific composer and singer who voice dominated the airwaves in East Africa for many years.

Marijani Rajabu (born in Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 3rd March 1955-1995) was a popular dance musician and singer. As a member of The Trippers (later known as Travel Trippers), he was most known for composing and performing songs such as Georgina, Rosa Go To School, and Spear In The Heart. After TheTrippers dissolved, Rajabu went on to be a member of Dar International Orchestre.
Below are just a few examples of his many great compositions. The poetry in the compositions is simply iconic.
