Fare hiked amid CS Kagwe directives

On Friday, in a presser, the super CS Kagwe ordered Matutus to follow precautions in a bid to control the spread of coronavirus.

He ordered 14 seater matatus to carry 8 passengers, 25 seaters to carry 15 and above 30 seaters to carry 60% of the passengers. This news was not taken well by matatu owners.

Today, Kenyans woke up to a big shock as the fare was hiked up to Sh200 others were charging as high as Sh300. We should stick to the #StayHome directives

As much as the CS gave the directives, he should have directed ERC to regulate the fuel price as well, in order to accomade everyone. Fare hikes are necessary since the matatus need fuel to operate.

As others hike their fares, swvl remainde loyal to their customers as they were seding their weekely code amounting to as low as sh20.

Have you left home yet? What's your experience so far?

Our transport industry is unique in that they are not supposed to make a loss whatsoever. The passengers have no option and it's made worse by law enforcers who usually side with the matatu guys .
The law enforcers and law makers have major interests in the industry, there is no reasoning with them. If the govt was serious about public transport they'd start by making it easier for SWVL and similar operators to operate, as well as putting up proper commuter trains in the city.
