Quarantine didn't start yesterday

. If you didn't know the name Karatina in nyeri county was coined from the word quarantine. It was where British soldiers recruited from the Kenya colony returning from the first world war in Europe where the Spanish influenza was ravaging the continent were being quarantined.

Now the Africans could not pronounce quarantine properly and it became Karatina.

So they would say so and so has been sent to Karatina meaning he has been sent to quarantine...

assuming they went and came back by ship, why so far inland? why not the coast?

NO! Karatina is the corrupted version of the English word ‘quarantine’. In the colonial times, the present Karatina was a market place where African brought cattle to sell. The cattle were first quarantined, checked by the Veterinary Office, passed for slaughter and taken to the abattoir. The Africans then could not speak English and were unable to pronounce “quarantine”. The corrupted pronunciation sounded like “karatina.” Karatina it became to be, even after the colonials, left.
 
@Meria ,I have a different explanation.
When the mzungu first introduced the Africans to tissue paper he warned them;

"If you don't use enough tissue paper while wiping your bum, you might end up with a Kara itina." (A finger up your bum)

That's what I was told...

😂😂😂😂 I have always wondered about how perverted were the residents to coin a term related to finger in anatomy.....
