Modern Small African Manufacturing Enterprises

After several decades of Indian manufacturing, very little manufacturing has trickled to Africans. And this has been by design since a spread of manufacturing would introduce undesired competition. Naturally, it is expected that manufacturing by foreigners gradually spreads to locals. This has been the case in the developing East Asian countries, where Japanese, Korean, and Chinese firms now have to compete with indigenous firms in countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.

In some way, Indian manufacturing in East Africa has had retrogressive effects since the skills never transfer to local populations as they are strongly guarded by investors using different tactics.

Gradually, we are seeing Kenyans establish small manufacturing enterprises that borrow from the Chinese model, which places emphasis on using modern methods as opposed to using discarded or obsolete machinery. Hopefully, more people will follow this trend and we could witness a transformative manufacturing culture.

Traditional gate keeping is falling apart. There's a bright future for Kenya and Africa as a whole.
