Wrong day length

Bulb onions are like people ,some prefer long sunny days, others like it short and sweet. There are short-day, long-day, and intermediate-day onions. If you plant the wrong type for your region, they’ll just sit there, growing leaves, wondering when you’ll realize your mistake. Know the onion varieties that does well in your region!

Too much nitrogen

Fertilizing onions is like feeding a baby ,you don’t give them a whole goat’s leg at once! Too much nitrogen makes onions grow big, lush leaves instead of forming bulbs. If your onions look like they’ve been hitting the gym but have no bulbs, ease up on the nitrogen. Instead, switch to supfur ,calcium and potassium when they start bulbing.

Planting too close

Ever tried sleeping in a crowded matatu (public means of transport)? That’s how your onions feel when planted too close. They struggle for space, light, and nutrients, ending up as stunted, unhappy plants. Give them room to breathe ,at least 7-10 cm apart.

Not enough water at the right time

Onions love water, but they also hate wet feet. Inconsistent watering -too little, too much, or stopping too early ,confuses them. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially when they start forming bulbs. Otherwise, they’ll get stressed and refuse to cooperate.

Weed competition

Weeds are the uninvited guests that eat your food and refuse to leave. They compete with onions for nutrients and water, making it harder for bulbs to form. Weed your farm regularly ,your onions will thank you.

Poor soil health

Onions are like kids ,they need a balanced diet. If your soil is poor, they won’t thrive. Test your soil, add compost, and balance nutrients. Organic matter improves soil structure and moisture retention, which is key for bulb formation.

If your onions aren’t forming bulbs, don’t panic. Check your variety, fertilization, spacing, water, and timing. Farming is all about learning ,sometimes from mistakes.

Happy farming!
