Cash exiting Banks to be quarantined

Central Bank of Kenya Governor Patrick Njoroge has announced that cash exiting Banks will be quarantined for one week in order to contain Coronavirus.

He has also said that loans received from banks to be reviewed in terms of payment for up to one year. If you had a bank loan that was due in March 2020, you have been added an extra year to complete your loans.

Banks have also waived transaction costs due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Transacting money from your bank to your wallet or mobile will be absolutely free starting today.

A very careless move if you ask me. We are now tempting bank runs on top of the already tense atmosphere. How will this move stop cash circulation among the masses? Expect kilometer-long queues as people seek to withdraw all their money.

I don't think the cash leaving banks is much of a problem than the low denomination notes that circulate amongst the citizenry without finding it's way into the banking system.
Have you ever been handed a 50, 100 or 200 shs note so battered and dirty that you didn't feel like handling it?
That's the kind of money to be worried about.
