Things i wish i knew before starting watermelon farming.

Watermelon farming is both enjoyable and profitable when done right. It requires good planning, proper land preparation, and consistent care. Here's a detailed guide to help you grow healthy watermelons and achieve great yields.

Land Preparation

After selecting the best seed variety, the next step is land preparation. Start by plowing the field thoroughly to loosen the soil. Add well-decomposed manure to enrich the soil with nutrients. This is essential whether you use drip irrigation or furrow irrigation.

While drip irrigation is effective for water conservation, furrow irrigation is often preferred for watermelon farming because it retains a lot of water. However, furrow irrigation requires access to permanent water sources for sustainability.

Breaking Seed Dormancy

To enhance germination, break the seed dormancy using this method:

1. Wrap the seeds in a cotton cloth.

2. Soak the cloth in warm water mixed with biostimulants for added vigor.

3. Leave the seeds overnight and plant them when ready.

Planting Methods and Spacing

You can plant watermelon seeds directly into the field or start them in trays for later transplanting. During planting or transplanting, use a spacing of 40-50 cm between plants and 1.5-2 meters between rows. This spacing allows plants to access enough nutrients, promotes airflow, and supports the growth of large, high-quality fruits.

Early Crop Management

After emergence, spray Imidacloprid to protect young plants from pests like locusts and other cutting insects.

One week after planting, apply phosphorus fertilizer to promote root and early plant development.

Fertilizer Schedule

Second top-dressing: Use a nitrogen + calcium-based fertilizer to encourage vegetative growth and strong cell wall development.

Final top-dressing: Apply potassium fertilizer to boost fruit size, sweetness, and quality.

Pest and Disease Management

Watermelon plants face various pests and diseases. Proper management is essential to prevent significant losses.

Pests:

Thrips and aphids: Use insecticides such as spinosad or neem-based solutions for control.

Fruit flies: These are the most destructive pests, damaging fruits directly. Use pheromone traps or insecticides to manage them effectively.

Diseases:

Powdery mildew: Prevent it by applying sulfur-based fungicides.

End rot: Maintain consistent irrigation and calcium levels.

Wilting: The main challenge in watermelon farming, often caused by soilborne pathogens. Control it through crop rotation and by planting disease-resistant varieties.

Additional Tips

1. Watermelon growth period: This crop takes 65-75 days to mature. Delayed management can lead to reduced yields and smaller fruits.

2. Water management: Overwatering can cause fruits to burst, so be careful not to overfeed plants with water.

3. Climate: Watermelons thrive in warm, dry areas. They develop a sweeter taste when grown in dry seasons.

Costs and Returns

In Kenya, cultivating one acre of watermelon typically costs around Ksh 100,000. Yields vary from 0 to 20 tonnes per acre depending on management practices.

Market prices: Prices range between Ksh 15 and Ksh 35 per kg when selling at the farm gate. Taking the produce directly to the market increases profitability.

Watermelon farming can be a lucrative venture when done correctly, so invest time in learning and applying the best practices. With proper care, you'll enjoy the fruits of your labor literally!
