John Badi on Finance Bill 24/25

Stop stealing, wastage, and corruption. That is the only good provision people are prepared for.

Denis Young and Othello don't think the solution lies in reducing wastage and corruption. To them we are in an economic hole- which I agree, but they see more taxation as the only way out.

Some of us are realistic. You will not end wastage and corruption even in the next 20 years. We haven't even hacked non-contentious elections yet. Every election cycle culminates in protests, death and political deal making.

Democratic progress is achieved over the course of many years. On the other hand, the economy cannot wait.

We are also realistic too. You cannot over tax people and expect them to continue keeping quiet as they watch their money being wasted.

I don't expect people to be quiet. Neither do I expect an end to overtaxation any time soon. Just see what is happening in Ethiopia now. I am waiting to see the magic bullet Mbadi is going to fire to solve the liquidity crisis and how he is going to generate more revenue without more taxation.

Unaelewa mambo ya Ethiopia kweli? Are you aware shida zao na economy escalated in 1992?

I mean, is this even a surprise anymore. Badi will soon be the most unpopular CS in the next few months.

On the political front, the members of ODM appear ready to hit the ground running and begin their work. It will be interesting to see if they will still be active around 2026/27, but given their current enthusiasm, it seems like a long-term commitment

Unaenda mbali kwa nini? I am on their default issue. Guess what? That IMF everyone is whining about in Kenya, they are now there after the default. Their currency is now being floated, inflation is through the rough and climbing and with it higher taxes.

That is what we have to look forward to thanks to rioting, political greed and judicial activism.

The opposition was happy to pile on the anger on the FB, withdrawing amendments and such, now Mbadi is saying the main problem with FB was communication and he will bring some clauses back?

Hakuna mahali wanaenda. It is a good thing in part from a stability point of view. Just like in war time it is always a smart idea to have government speaking as one. There can be no divisions in the political class when a difficult decision is taken, especially now concerning the economy.

Tough decisions on debt will need to be taken and they will need to have broad based support.

Nimeenda mbali because Ethiopia's history with IMF started in 1992. Then in 2010. Then 2017. 2019 they were to do a deal with IMF but Oromo war started they took a pause.

inflation is through the rough and climbing

Ati Ethiopian inflation is climbing! I can clearly tell hujui fully what's happening in Ethiopia.

Last week. So when you said inflation is climbing you mean in 4 days the inflation has gone up?

Then why bring data from a month or two ago?

And yes. That is what I am saying. The Birr has devalued over 80% in those 4 days and goods and services are being repriced as we speak. Sellers are even hoarding their goods making products scarce and pushing prices even higher.

So what's the change in the rate of inflation from last week? And do you know what happened to the inflation when Ethiopia devalued the birr in 1992 and 2010?

There are no official figures but we can bet on if they will be north of 25% or not once they are released?
