Over the long weekend, I had a lot of thoughts about the protests planned today to have the voice of the mwananchi heard in opposing the finance bill. I'm sure by now all of us are quite aware of how evil its stipulations are.
So I asked for an off day, which my employer wasn't very pleased about considering jana was a public holiday.
This protest has been very unique. For one, a lot younger people showed up. The politicians, in all their folly, might not be fully aware, but our population pyramid looks like this...
The other thing is that politicians such as Rao weren't behind it all. People are just tired, and though this Mwas made the rallying call, the protest has been very organic.
I have shed a lot of teargas-induced tears today, but I am home happy and proud. Not because I was out there and enjoyed the euphoria of a crowd chanting in unison, but because I can tell my kids that I did what I could when their future lives were at stake. That is something I hold dearly since my dad was heavily involved in opposing Moi's rule.
Now a protest might not be enough, so we must seek ways to make our legislators understand that we're effing fed up with their idiocy. In fact, if you haven't gone through the bill, here it is. Educate yourself so that we make very informed choices in the future, and importantly, ensure those elected represent you and future generations.
