True !
By the way, like so many other South African brands before them such as Wimpy, Woolworths, Game, Shoprite etc, they are pulling out of the Kenyan market.
Makes for an interesting study on why they fail here, eh @Okiya?
Spot on. Somebody pointed out Builders ingekuwa place kama Utawala and with local prices, ingetoboa. The experience of shopping there was nice, parking more than sufficient but location tafash sana.builders are pulling out of Kenya?
But i think reason they fail is because kenya is still a lower-middle class market. Not enough purchasing power to sustain a mass market business model. Game stores were set up only in affluent neighborhoods and pricing is also not so friendly , they don't attract lower middle class who are the majority.
Even builders is set up in Karen but most folks are mass building on the eastern side and we don't have DIY culture in kenya, hata kuchange bulb unapata mtu anaita electrician. Also they tend to force products made in SA which are hardly known by majority and don't advertise. Their shops appear to elitist.

Sasol, Woolworths, Old Mutual: Why South African firms fail when they leave Africa - The Africa Report.com
South African businesses often fail miserably in western markets. The key to their success may be to invest in Africa rather than jump into foreign ones.www.theafricareport.com

I used to pass there while using the bypass from Emba to Thika Rd so can't say nakujua sana. Twice visited a friend from those sides and you can imagine my shock upon realizing that she stays in an area there called Githunguri@mzeiya how is your experience with utawala?.... Specifically wapi?

Anyway, a growing area like Utawala has a demand for building materials, even though local hardware stores provide the essentials thus Builders might've had a chance.
