When a criminal defendant is convicted by a Court of law, it follows that they must be punished for it by fine or by serving time or both.
There is a principle in criminal sentencing known as totality of sentencing.
What the principle addresses is differentiating whether a criminal defendant deserves a consecutive or a concurrent sentence.
Where a defendant has committed similar crimes against society or crimes against same party, then a concurrent sentence might be awarded.

Different crimes against different parties mostly attracts consecutive sentences.

The whole point about this is to ensure that all sentencing is just and proportionate to the offence.

Concurrent sentences shows how many years someone is serving without sounding ridiculous, like for instance sentencing someone to 120 years.
This mechanism allows each and every crime, like in this case, to be fully punished.

So, what would be the effect on someone serving a life sentence? Assuming there's no death penalty.

It’s in our human nature to see those responsible for heinous crimes outed, shamed and punished.
There is nothing as devastating and disheartening as an unresolved murder, especially to the nearest and dearest.
