Tracing Type 56-1 assault rifles in Somalia​


The civil war in Yemen has served as a battleground for Saudi Arabia and its allies against the Iranian-backed Houthi insurgents. While Saudi Arabia and its allies waged war in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government based in Aden, evidence suggests that the Houthis, in turn, have received training and other material support from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A portion of this Iranian support has consisted of deliveries of small arms and light weapons (SALW) to Yemen, carried out by sophisticated, transnational maritime trafficking networks. Over the course of eight months, our researchers documented over 400 illicit weapons in 13 locations across Somalia – including the Type 56-1 assault rifle that had likely originated in Iranian arms shipments to the Houthis. This study cross-references the serial numbers of the Type 56-1s documented in Somalia against those of almost 5 200 similar rifles recovered in six locations between August 2018 and May 2021.

This sounds like anti-Iranian piece of propaganda.

From your map data, even assuming that 50% of the documented illicit arms came from Iranian sources, where did the others come from?

Why doesn't any part of the article mention that Saudia and western rich nations have banded together to corwardly attack a beggar desert nation an action which led to the proliferation of small arms in the region?

And what is the definition of illicit arms?

Why isn't every gun, 100%, held by Alshabab from the map illicit?

If Somaliland (which has not been recognised by most western states) arms its police and army, are the guns then illicit?

Somalia and Yemen have been trade partners for thousands of years, the Yemenis have for centuries benefitted from trading herbs and spices found in Somalia. The resilient trade routes won't change since the world prefects are supporting bombing and killings of Yemenis. As witnessed everywhere conflict zones are a great source of proliferation of small arms in the neighborhood.
Lastly, in that map Elwak a Kenyan town which serves as a Constituency headquarters is placed inside Somalia, strange!

I believe El Wak and Belet Hawo are border town and stretch within the 2 countries. Similar to Namanga.
