Just back from the Ssebo side.... Very tired and very annoyed ... And things are really not going well between Kenya and Uganda. The standoff at the Border has created a terrible mess... The traffic Jam is now 30km into Kenya side past Kanduyi, headed to Bukembe.....
There is complete paralysis. Uganda has introduced a very silly rule... Insisting that they don't trust the Kenyan health system, hence every person who has been tested for Covid-19 or vaccinated needs to be tested again in Uganda and vaccinated again... At the cost of 3,600 shillings or 110,000 Ugandan shillings....
This Covid-19 standoff is just a trigger.... Things have not been good for the past 2 years.....
The cold War between Uhuru and Museveni is n8no longer cold... It is real war...
Some little bird in Jinja keeps telling me that Ssebo promised Uhuru that Uganda would invest in the Naivasha Land.... And put up a cargo handling base at the end of the SGR land....this made Uhuru happy, and allowed special deals like Sugar, Milk and Maize....
But after kufanya hesabu, my little bird continues, Ssebo saw that the Naivasha deal was dead... Furthermore, he counted the days left at the Uhuru Presidency... And said... No...
This led to the sugar deals being canceled and all Importation canceled...
Thus, the bitter fallout.....
I don't know how true the allegations are, but there are always rumors and rumor mongers ready with stories...
However, since Ssebo rejected the Naivasha deal, things have been very hard for cross border traders... Mara Maize has Aflatoxin, Mara Eggs are sijui what. Mara Sugar is sijui what. Mara milk has sijui what... Kwani the things started only after Uganda refused to buy the Naivasha land?
Anyway the second little bird says that the issue has been made worse by the choice of the presidential candidate by the system. Ssebo has never been comfortable with a president who comes from the Luo Nation (or alleges to be a Luo)
His biggest problem is the that a Luo president will inspire the Ugandan Luo Nation to rise against him. Remember, Ssebo spent 10 years in the Bush fighting the Luo Nation that ruled and controlled power in Uganda from the days of Obote, Amin(Though not Luo but was propped up by the Acholi power brokers) and Tito Okello.
Because of this Ssebo would do anything in his power to ensure that anyone from or purports to be Luo is never near power. In 2007, it is alleged that he sent soldiers to help quell violence in Kisumu...
And this year, he is alleged to be sending hundreds of millions to a candidate who shall not be named due to the sensitivity of the matter...
So, as much as we are seeing terrible traffic Jams, things are deeper than they seem.
