His death shouldn’t be the end of the case, especially if the Prosecution had finished their submissions and the Defendant had replied by way of their testimony and cross examinations. Right?

That would mean that all that was left was for the Judge to make a determination of guilt or otherwise having considered all facts presented by both parties.

If it turns out that the Defendant was guilty and is thus sentenced to a jail term and a fine, his estate will be legally bound to pay that fine to the full.
