The Port of Mombasa recorded historic moments as the giant US Naval ship USS Hershel "Woody" Williams graciously sailed into the Kilindini Channel.
KPA marine pilot Captain Nikolaus Wambiakaley boarded the warship and navigated her through the channel to berth at No. 21. She becomes the first US naval ship to enter the port for the last 15 years.
Acting Managing Director Eng. Rashid Salim met the Captain of USS Hershel Michael Concannon to welcome the vessel to the port. Eng. Rashid appreciated the splendid work the USS Hershel and the entire mission is doing to support maritime safety and security in the African high seas around the continent.
The vessel USS Hershel "Woody" Williams is a Puller-class expeditionary mobile base, currently in service for the United States Navy Military Sealift Command. The vessel is designed to be a semi-submersible, flexible, modular platform providing the US Navy with the capability to perform large-scale logistics movements such as the transfer of vehicles and equipment from sea to shore.
