Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been transferred to Kamiti Maximum GK Prison for detention, K24 Digital has been told.
The ex-county chief’s lawyer, John Khaminwa, said at 4:50pm Wednesday that he was headed to Kamiti to meet his client, who was earlier being held in custody at Gigiri Police Station.
It remains unclear why Sonko — who had earlier unsuccessfully sought to be moved to Muthaiga Police Station over alleged threat on his life — was taken to Kamiti Wednesday evening. We are seeking to find out.
Sonko, who is facing a litany of charges including Ksh10 million corruption allegation, will on Thursday, February 4 know whether he will be freed on cash bail or not. The matter will be handled by the Kiambu Law Courts.

Sonko breaks down, cries in court as he appears in graft case

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko cried in court as he appeared for the mention of a corruption case that he is facing.
This morning (Wednesday), Sonko asked the Anti-Corruption Court to grant him 14 days to prepare for the hearing of the Sh14 million graft case.

However, his new set of four lawyers, led by Dr John Khaminwa, sought 30 days to prepare for the case.
Dr Khaminwa said previous lawyers who were representing Sonko have since opted out.
Dr Khaminwa asked the court to direct that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission hand over to him all other records of the case.
But the Director of Public Prosecutions opposed the request for more time, saying that seven days are enough.

Sonko told Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti that he cried because police preferred more charges against him after he refused to withdraw an affidavit adversely mentioning Christine Pratt Kenyatta in a case over the appointment of the Nairobi deputy governor.
He urged the court to grant him time to instruct new lawyers who will handle the graft case.
