Those from west of the Aberdares and are familiar with the grazing fields there help me identify this plant. From the flowers and thorns I thought it was a thistle but it doesn't seem to be documented among thistles on the net.

yes it has thorns and the dry one was especially a menace to barefooted herdsboys.
elders used its root for treating toothaches.
