The law requires that fishermen only use nets of a certain gauge (determined by the size of holes) to enable the young fish escape and mature and reproduce; otherwise allowing the catching of baby fish depletes the resource and makes the fishing unsustainable. The fishermen know wakishikwa na illegal it is impounded and destroyed.
In this aspect, the government may be right on one hand and wrong on the other hand. One, those nets are of course not to the standard and should not be used. Now its the work of the government to teach and empower this youths on the importance of using the approved nets for fishing. It's sad that agriculture extension officers are a thing of past

I can assure you that the fishermen are properly sensitized by fisheries officers/scouts. it is the reason why illegal net owners avoid official landing beaches where their boats and nets are inspected as well as catch weights and sizes recorded.

do you have information from the ground or just speculating. Sensitization should not be a one-off thing it should be as regular as possible even weekly because of the new entrants in fishing but you and I know very well government officers take their jobs like some sort of hobby no one follows up on anything.
