This looks like an obvious solution that should have been invented concurrently with the airplane. There is a good reason it never was invented. The parachutes needed to accomplish such a task would be too big, heavy, and costly to be practical. Heavy here means the pilot would have to choose between carrying the passengers or the parachutes.

I think it's unrealistic for it to land.....the velocity of the plane once detached was unaccounted for.... considering the shape of the back.
