He knew there would be trouble but he was ready to take the risk. Everybody would react in the same way if the amount were right relative to their financial status. If a man's bank balance revolves around the minimum withdrawable, not even a death threat will hold him back from taking advantage of a windfall.
 
The worst you can do is to deny. When it is the bank's mistake they will initially try all sorts of threats to get you to return it. (Usually the employee responsible as they want to cover their mess). Their primary aim is to recover the money so they will even pester you to commit to some recovery plan. Remember litigation is also not cheap especially where the money is not much.
