Why high end brands were created

Ever ask yourself why high end brands were created?
A random thought just came to mind, based on experience visiting high end designer shops. Not to buy but rather out of curiosity.
See growing up in the early 90s to date, there's, or there was, a lot of fuss on designer brands.
In music videos, movies, especially in the mid 90s.
That is when we were boastfully introduced to Hilfiger, Pele Pele, Gucci, Versace, DKNY and the likes. So upon my first visit to the Arab desert, I was curious to check the designer shops out.
I consider myself an average dresser, meaning, I don't like flashy shouting stuff, I don't like common stuff either.
What I like is quality, unique but simple stuff.
To give you an example, you wouldn't find me wearing any trending fashion.
Anyways I go into one designer shop, and surprised to see how lousy looking the fashion was, but the price tags were up there.
Not all designer brands have stupid designs, some really have amazing quality stuff, the materials you see at a glance and immediately know they're legit.
Anyways it came to my mind, whoever started the designer trend, found and easy way to squeeze money out of these rich guys who could hardly dress, so the designer just made the prices out of reach and branded the them.
Thats why you just hear rich people, referring their clothes by designer names.
What is your take?
By the way hate to disappoint people who were into wearing timberlands in the 2000s,they were all and still fake. Timberlands have never been priced less that 100usd.
Actually most brands you see people wearing in KE are all fake.
Very few people can afford the real deal, hell even the rich are money conscious these days or call them stingy.

Veblen goods, or goods of ostentation, are specifically made for people who have more money than sense.
The pretentious rich and the nouveau riche are especially a target coz they believe the marque products will help announce their new status. Marketers of these goods exploit the social vulnerabilities of these people who crave for acceptability.

The guys wearing fluorescent green timberland boots or the girls walking around with the CHANNAL branded handbag that she bought for 3k know for sure that it isn't original. Its to get by from a cursory look.
However, you'll find the guy in gikomba selling jordans is selling the real shit.
The people who do care and want original designer goods know where to find them. Its just a matter of deciding if you are willing to pay the coin for its condition.

Don't like attention or drawing attention, being unique yes sometimes. I prefer dealing with my gikomba friends

Actually, thousands of Kenyans wear genuine designer labels - through mutumba. Lakini most don't even know those labels because honestly, they ain't important any way.............

Rich people wear expensive stuff but it's very subtle. Unless they are new money they don't want to attract attention to themselves so they keep it simple. A good example is these tech start up yuppies and NGO/think-tank types. They will show up to a business lunch dressed in a simple manner like Mark Zuckerberg. But that plain white t-shirt is Alexander Wang costing $500 and the jeans are Yves Saint Laurent costing $1000. Even the pen they use to sign documents can pay someone's rent for 1 year.
