She said some of the children are taboo children. In some societies, some children born from certain circumstances such as incestous relationships were considered taboo children and killed. Others that could be killed as taboo children were twins. Modern sensibilities, including the law, however, do not allow the killing anymore. But some backward people still believe that taking such children home would bring bad luck so they abandon them.

When i used to live in kitale with my sister huko Kolongolo, there was a prominent Bukusu business man called Wafula. He had a bread making factory called "Bidii Bakery". He married his first kikuyu wife who left him with his kids in early 80s . Then he married 2nd wife who was Bukusu . She gave him twins ( a boy and a girl). The bukusus elders gave him two choices ;
1 keep the wife and kill the twins
2 keep the twins but divorce your wife

Being a man torn in between being modernised and cultural expectation, he chose to keep the twins and divorce the beautiful bukusu girl . Bukusus are very very strict with their cultures ..hapana mchezo.

Igbos also used to kill twins in the past. I read it has the highest number of twins in the world.
