The first time red plum jam reached our village, people thought it was blood from lost kids who got sacrificed. It was at the height of illuminati and devil worship fracas. Everyone doing well was associated with the cult. It was even worse if he or she lost a loved one. It was believed it was a sacrifice. It saw the wealthy excommunicated and avoided. This time it happened closer to home.
Thanju visited Mama Clare's home to borrow a Jembe. Only to find her family having breakfast. She saw her spreading jam on a loaf of bread and even eating it. She offered him some. Knowing how Thanju loves bread, imagine he declined? He knew his goose would be cooked if he dared eating it. He shot out of her house screaming and adressing anyone who dared to listen. He claimed seeing Mama clare eating human blood.
Coincidentally, 2 days earlier, a young boy had got lost. His young mother had been going alot after divorcing with her husband, and now her only kid was no where to be seen.
The chief was informed and alerted the Local police station. They were set for a big operation. Everybody had started questioning Mama Clare's change in lifestyle. She had even evolved more beautiful and voluptuous. Her kids were now in a private school and her husband had a new car.
The village was thirsty of her blood. They weren't ready to see their kids getting lost one by one. They wanted to lynch her. Thinwa even had a stone just about to kickstart mob justice when the chief arrived. Thanju was called to explain what happened. He held the chief's hand and directed him to the red plum jam tin. Pointing it at a distance from the fear of touching it, he shouted;
"Chifū! Here is the blood."
All this time Mama Clare was hoping someone exposed would stand by her. Luckily the chief was well traveled. He had a long day trying to explain that it was not blood but a mere bread spread. Unfortunately, the only known bread spread in the village was ripe avocados.
Amidst the confusion, the over reacting young mother who had even poured dirty water on Mama Clare received a call that the kid has been found. He had disappeared to his father's house in a shopping centre away. The villagers walked away in shame one by one dropping their clude weapons.
Having given the villagers free water from her borehole for a while, she knew it was time to cut ties.
