Kenya is undertaking several major construction projects aimed at enhancing its infrastructure and economic environment. This is both the private and public sectors.
Here are the top five ongoing projects:
Talanta Stadium
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are set to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) football tournament in a joint bid. To this end, Kenya has decided to upgrade the existing Kasarani stadium and build Talanta stadium to FIFA international standards.
Talanta Sports Stadium, also known as Talanta Sports City, is a significant infrastructure project currently under construction in Nairobi, Kenya.
The stadium is strategically located at the Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road, approximately 10 kilometers west of Nairobi's central business district.
The estimated construction cost of the stadium is approximately Ksh 45 billion. The stadium is designed to accommodate 60,000 spectators, making it one of the largest in the region.
The project is being executed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company. The Kenya Defense Forces' Engineering Department is overseeing the construction to ensure adherence to quality standards.
The construction commenced on March 1, 2024, with an expected completion date in December 2025.
The architectural design draws inspiration from Kenya's national emblem, featuring elements reminiscent of the shield and two spears.
The Talanta Stadium is intended to host football and rugby events, as well as concerts. Notably, it will not include an athletics track, though adjacent facilities for athletics are planned.
Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor Project:
Valued at approximately Ksh 2 trillion, LAPSSET is Kenya's most ambitious infrastructure project.
It encompasses the development of Lamu Port, highways, railways, an oil refinery, and a 2,240 km pipeline connecting South Sudan's oil fields to Lamu. The project also includes the construction of resort cities, airports, and power lines.
The project aims to enhance regional integration between Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. It will also unlock economic potential in Northern Kenya. It will also place Lamu as a major transport and logistics hub in Africa. The port of Mombasa will also benefit as there will be reduced congestion thus making it more effective.
Tatu City
Tatu City is a landmark mixed-use development located about 24 kilometers from Nairobi’s central business district. Spanning approximately 5,000 acres, it is designed to be a self-sustaining urban hub with residential, commercial, and industrial zones.
Key Features of Tatu City include residential Areas, a commercial district, industrial park, educational Institutions, green spaces and recreation, infrastructure, and a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
Significant portions of the city, including residential areas and industrial zones, are already operational.
Infrastructure development is ongoing, with new schools, businesses, and housing projects continuously being added.
Tatu City has attracted billions in investment from local and international stakeholders. The project generates thousands of jobs and contributes to Kenya’s economic growth.
88 Nairobi Condominium Tower
The 88 Nairobi Condominium Tower is an iconic residential skyscraper under construction in Nairobi's Upper Hill neighborhood. Upon completion, it will become the tallest residential building in Africa, standing at 150 meters with 47 floors.
The tower will house 288 luxury condominiums, offering one-bedroom executive units, two-bedroom executive-plus units, duplexes, and penthouses. All units are fully furnished, providing residents with high-end living spaces.
Residents will enjoy a range of facilities, including a convenience store, a 150-seat branded restaurant, spa and gym, meeting and business center, three resident bars, a lavish communal lounge, and a heated indoor swimming pool located on the 31st floor. Additionally, there is parking space for 518 vehicles.
The building showcases modern international design, aiming to provide unparalleled views of Nairobi’s skyline from each unit, with spectacular sunsets visible from the sunset deck on the 34th floor
Construction commenced in February 2018, with an initial completion date set for 2023. However, due to various challenges, the completion has been rescheduled to the first quarter of 2025.
Affordable Housing Program (AHP)
Affordable Housing Program (AHP) is a key component of the government's "Big Four Agenda," aiming to address the significant housing deficit by constructing 250,000 affordable housing units annually.
Notable Housing Projects include the Pangani Housing, Kings Orchid Thika, Kings Sapphire situated in Bondeni, Nakuru County, Starehe Point 1 located in Starehe Constituency, Nairobi, and Mabera Affordable Housing situated in Migori County.
However, the project has been facing funding and implementation challenges. Introduction of mandatory levies to fund the housing program has been met with resistance from some quarters.
