Simple answer is why are you adding the balance? What does the sum of the balances represent, its definitely not the amount prior to expenditure!
If you had 10bob, monday you spent a shilling, tuesday another, wednesday another.... if you add the balance you'd get 9+8+7.... Again I ask, why add the balances?
Question in itself is a misdirection, it wants you to believe the sum of balances represents the origimal amount at hand, but its just a sum of what was left.
