Today in history: April 14th

On the fourteenth of April 2014, under the cover of night in the remote Nigerian town of Chibok, over two hundred schoolgirls were abducted by the Islamist paramilitary organisation known as Boko Haram. Their main motivation for the abduction was their opposition to Western style education (these guys believe that the Earth is flat and that rain is made by God so not surprising), it's also believed that the abductions were also a response to the crackdown on the insurgents in May 2013 during a
state-of-emergency in three Nigerian states. The extremists had been known to carry out attacks on schools, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of students. In 2014 attacks by Boko Haram increased, including the killing of more than 100 Christian men in the villages of Doron and Ighze. The same day as the abduction of the schoolgirls, a bombing attack in Abuja was carried out which at least 88 people died. Far away in Chibok, the Boko Haram militants broke into the school, pretending to be guards. Most of the girls were hearded into trucks and ferried to the insurgent's camps, the rest were marched through the forest to their destination. Amnesty International said it believes the Nigerian military had four hours' advance warning of the kidnapping, but failed to send reinforcements to protect the school. Sorry for posting late today, working from home can be hectic, but I should be able to post better quality content later on.
