This is a thread I encountered on Twitter.
I think the guy makes some very interesting points as to the endgame of the pandemic we now face. Read on...
What COVID-19 did for China?
Takes attention off their slowing economy, as everyone is screwed, Hong Kong protests over, Trade War is over, Huawei may get a push as new investments in telecom won't be feasible for many, their medical exports work, BRI may get a stronger push.
Honestly, if I were China, I'd be having a good laugh right now. As others clean up this mess, China gets enough time to clean up its books, inject capital limitlessly as they have been over the past year, and enhance their ways of dictatorial rule.
It's great PR as well. They were criticized for their surveillance system, but that has worked for them wonderfully or was made to. Many states would be tempted to employ that model. Another thing for the Chinese to export, and a validation for their surveillance system.
Remember, China comes out as a hero out of this, and not Europe or the United States. India did not have a dog in this fight, so we are fine. Imagine it cleared up Hong Kong for them, and who knows what they are planning next.
To understand China, who doesn't have a 5-year mentality as we do, you have to think like them. They think 100-years at a time, and for them, the COVID-19 may have been a parking ticket in the scheme of things. Look what it did to them, and their markets are doing decent.
Now, some may say that 'oh, but MNCs would move their supply chains out of China', but hey, China got the monster in control better than Europe is right now. India may become a preferred place, but China did enough right things for not to be replaced by India altogether.
Also, oil. They killed the demand for oil, and that aids their cause at this hour. I am not sure of how much they are importing right now, given the demand would be low, but they may well stock up. They have created an oil war and escaped a trade war. Coincidence much? Not sure.
Also, no one is buying this bio-weapon theory. I honestly am not convinced myself, but the end product of all this has been so good for China that I wonder if this entire thing, from December to now, was some sort of planned bio war game or something. Just a theory.
Today, the number of people dead outside China surpassed the count in China. Call it Wuhan virus, or whatever, but this is no longer a Chinese problem. It's a global headache, and a big one at that, as big as Voldemort standing next to Potter close. All this is a coincidence?
Trump just called this the 'Chinese virus' in one of his recent tweets. Perhaps, even the world is now waking up to the fact that all this may have been planned. Once the dust settles, one may expect the US and Europe to come together to screw the Chinese. Long shot, however.
Also, I am China, I am laughing right now because what the virus from my land did to the markets inside the US evens out the impact I suffered from the trade war. Again, think like the Chinese to understand what I am saying. For them, the end justifies the means.
The markets are crashing all over the world but look at the % change in China. JUST LOOK AT IT! I wouldn't be surprised if this is revenge for the trade war. The Chinese are going to be indispensable for a global recovery, but this is bonkers.
Ah, so the soft-power is already in motion.
Here's a Bloomberg Asia piece: bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
Quoting from the piece:
"In fact, each government seems to be reinventing the wheel, though events eventually force them to take China’s path: closing schools and public places, shutting borders, imposing curfews, inhibiting movement."
"One doesn’t have to agree with heavy-handedness. But one lesson is that containing this pandemic relies on strict controls".
"Leave aside questions of authoritarianism and democracy for the moment. Would other large countries have fared much differently? The U.S. and European responses suggest not, and they had a largely wasted opportunity to watch China and prepare themselves."
Another piece that celebrates China. Telling you, this is all a part of the grand Chinese strategy.
bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
To quote from the above article:
"As America struggles to test its citizens and build adequate stockpiles of basic health-care supplies, such as masks, the Chinese government (and prominent Chinese firms) are providing supplies to countries such as Italy and even U.S. itself."
Ah, after the virus, they want to export the experience of dealing with it.

Coronavirus in India: Ready to help India with epidemic prevention experience, says ChinaCoronavirus update: The Chinese foreign ministry said it could help with both the “control” and “diagnosis” of the spread of the disease in India.https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/coronavirus-in-india-ready-to-help-india-with-epidemic-prevention-experience-says-china/story-Gnmoz731NQc9zxHaLAmqeI.html
Italy, last night, registered more deaths than China did due to the virus. Now, if someone wants to say that China suffered the most is obviously lying. Interestingly, amongst the EU, Italy was one of the most pro-China nations out there.
Here's another piece. Beijing is already using the virus to further its position as the new world leader.

The Coronavirus Could Reshape Global OrderChina is maneuvering for international leadership during the coronavirus crisis as the United States falters.https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/2020-03-18/coronavirus-could-reshape-global-order
Quoting from the above piece:
"Yet Beijing understands that if it is seen as leading, and Washington is seen as unable or unwilling to do so, this perception could fundamentally alter the US’ position in global politics and the contest for leadership in the 21st century."
"Beijing is working to turn these early signs of success into a larger narrative to broadcast to the rest of the world—one that makes China the essential player in a coming global recovery while airbrushing away its earlier mismanagement of the crisis. "
"When no European state answered Italy’s urgent appeal for medical equipment and protective gear, China publicly committed to sending 1,000 ventilators, two million masks, 100,000 respirators, 20,000 protective suits, and 50,000 test kits."
Well, the virus came from China, eh?
Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma has promised to send large quantities of testing kits and masks to the United States, as well as 20,000 test kits and 100,000 masks to each of Africa’s 54 countries.
Africa is all set to be the next Chinese colony.
"It was already the major producer of surgical masks; now, through wartime-like industrial mobilization, it has boosted production of masks more than tenfold, giving it the capacity to provide them to the world. "
What China is selling here is its manufacturing capacity.
//
Even if one were to consider moving supply chains out of China to India, for instance, can we assure the scaling up of manufacturing at the speed at which China does? 'Wartime like industrial mobilisation' is being used to describe China's capacity. The created the war, damn.
"Similarly, China’s share of the U.S. antibiotics market is more than 95%, and most of the ingredients cannot be manufactured domestically. Although the US offered assistance to China and others at the outset of the crisis, it is less able to do so now, as its own needs grow."
China has sent a team of experts to Italy to share their experiences of containing the outbreak. One of them described the coronavirus measures adopted in the Lombardy region as “lax”.
You can't make this shit up!

To quote: "China's efficient use of modern technology has helped the country gain the upper hand in its virus fight. The use of drones to conduct thermal imaging and robots for disinfecting has helped doctors to effectively diagnose and treat patients."
Its (China) efforts were praised in a report released by the World Health Organization's joint mission with China on Feb 28. It said, "China's bold approach to contain the rapid spread of this new respiratory pathogen has changed the course of a rapidly escalating epidemic."
This is from 16/3.
"Shaken by the sharp fall in its stock market, China's central bank on February 2 said it would inject 1.2 trillion yuan ($174 billion) worth of liquidity into market through reverse repo operations."

SCE has clocked a decline of 2.53% since the first case of coronavirus was reported in the country. The Chinese market index, stood at 2,962 on December 25, five days before China reported several cases of an unknown virus to WHO. Currently, the SCE stands at 2,887.

NEW EXPORT:
“As the deployment of big data, artificial intelligence and technologies related to the Internet of Things (IoT) speeds up, digital health care will emerge as the new key infrastructure of the industry,” said Gary Wang Qiang, senior vice-president of Alibaba Health."
"Robots have also been deployed to pick out suspected coronavirus carriers from a crowd. Hong Kong start-up Roborn Technology designed a mobile robot equipped with thermal scanners that can live-stream temperature readings to a control centre, can send an alert when necessary."
China will also have enough digital data on its hands to monitor its citizens for their health parameters. They will export this technology to the West, and surely, the likes of GAFA would be interested in it after Covid-19.
Now, do recall, that earlier this week China fired all the US workers of @nytimes, @washingtonpost, and @WSJ. Now, the three papers are often seen reporting with a bias but for the next few weeks, expect some solid pieces elsewhere that celebrate China's success against Covid-19.
This thread is writing itself now.
